A vidéo-l’eau

« We do not dream deeply with objects. In order to dream deeply, one must dream with elements. » (See Gaston Bachelard, Water and Dreams)

To video -water

The sea no longer makes us dream... Domesticated and constantly available tap water is forgotten and remains in its own surroundings. It is true that there is a difference between temperate climates and tropical or equatorial climates. However with global warming, the sea awakens and becomes dangerous once again, tidal waves, floods and deluges are on the increase and spreading to continents which were normally unaffected by this phenomena; the land is drying up and water becomes scare even in temperate zones.

Seafaring imaginary which seemed to have run dry, springs to life again, promising environmental catastrophies. However, this vital element has always remained in the subconscious as a symbol and primary impulse - fear and desire… the fear of water, of being swallowed up, even though it is often hidden, is as common as the opposite… the feeling of well-being perpetually associated with the idealistic image of the sea and the sun.

If Marcel Dinahet develops an obsession with water, he turns his back however on the high seas and the marine fantasy world as well as aquatic themes: the beginning, the infinite, the abyss, death or the window of the soul. When he films a choppy sea in Belle-Ile it is without pretention. There is no psychology or metaphysical depths with this artist whose interest lies in terrestrial water, shore or literal – looking at the land from the sea « the true eye of the earth is water » (See Gaston Bachelard. Water and Dreams).

Running Water

The artist scrutinizes this « eye of the earth » and with the video camera fixes it “eye for an eye”. He films the coastline, the embankments, the estuaries, the sea and waterway ports and harbours. Over twenty years with one medium, the video camera, he thus explores continental and calm waters. The sea of the holiday makers, the big waterways like the Saône and the Loire or country rivers (Le Seille, The River) He inspects sandy rocky banks (Er Lannic) or river banks (The Institutions filmed in Strasbourg and in London) or man-made ( Golfe Berder) in the Morbihan Gulf. Favouring accessible waters… Well trodden and well signposted, where sea and land meet and seperate, Dinahet abandons the notion of heroic water. Near the coastline, the sea presents no potential threat.

In line with experimental video of the 1980’s, the video graphic work explores the intimate relations between water and land. Dinahet’s approach is similar to Gaston Bachelard who thinks by dreaming reality using elements like water and fire (Water and Dreams, The psychoanalysis of fire) Dinahet dives into reality : if he observes water he actually swims in it to film. According to him « the plunge into the unknown is always a dive into water…. Running water.

Since the artist films natural or man-made beauty spots he creates landscapes and so must answer questions linked to this theme, the viewpoint, relations between the perceiver and the perceived. However, with his video camera, he shifts his queries towards the body and so proposes perceptions of landscapes.

The artist uses the landscape as an observer, a walker, a swimmer and videographer. This gives at least three types of videos depending on his operating methods in a particular site. Filmed with a camera on the body, certain videos show action, others are filmed in water and gives an impression of immersion and finally a third category uses a fixed background. His works are generally presented in projections and installations and screened in large format; this open way of projecting is particularly suited to aqua-land images.

Landscape – Actions

Dinahet approaches landscape as one would board a ship, he attacks it, captures it by storm. Sur la baie, the camera quickly advances to the pace of the walker-cameraman on a wide sandy bay with the tide out opposite a faraway horizon. The camera seems to swallow the landscape with a devouring sound and which in effect is only the sounds of the steps of the walker. The sound track accentuates the breath and the crunching sound of the steps in the sand. These noises are like points of impact emphazing the contact between the body and the environment. The artist adopts a somatic stance, the subjective camera and the sound track transmit the inner organic perception of the walker. Gulf Walk is filmed at a close-up angle, depict the two boots of a walker plodding along wet sand opposite us, the spectators. These two videos emphasise the repeated movement, and the obsessive rhythm of the walk. The artist utilises as a cinematographic technique tight framing and sound track to create the effect of presence. These techniques intensify the « scene » suggesting the point of view of a character who is after or on the point of accomplishing an important act ; they symbolize a realistic or documentary style which remind us of film directors like the Dardenne brothers. These two works are exemples of raw yet purified aesthetics centered on experiences and perception - always very simple. Marcel Dinahet’s filming devises are centered on the body which is transformed into a medium… which is to say into a surface in contact with the air, water, the earth as well as recording techniques. The body makes up the landscape, the landscape is seen through the body as if it has filled the space.

The artist also made videos walking or running on the beach (Dinard) or on the banks of a river (Estuaries filmed on the Loire river). They could be called scumbled landscapes after the title of a video, or else landsape –action as they seem to have been made by an action. In Scumbled Landscape the camera turns quickly on itself in a circular movement. Thus swept over and « scumbled » the panorama twirls around and its horizon swings back. The landscape is no longer a visual spectacle but an experience which implies a gesture and so making it the subject matter. In this way, scumbled landscapes offer landscape experiences which accentuate the interaction between a body and a site. The walker invades the landscape seeing it as he sees it but the artist remains with feet on the ground.

Video

The artist develops special landscape techniques thanks to video where he exploits certain qualities. This visual controllable instrument increases perception potential by extending the body with an extra organ or antenna. The videographer who often operates with the camera attached to his body thus films with his body without being able to see what he records thus producing true coroporal visions. His images show a corporal and not an oculary point of view. His technique is more like that of the 60’s and 70’s but Dinahet closely correlates the two techniques, performance and video through filming by means of a camera on the body.

Created on an impulse these images seem to shoot out of the body which is not however subjective but discerning « It is in the very flesh in the organs that the first material images take root « (Gaston Bachelard) Dinahet makes dynamic first shot and sensual images searching perhaps for a vital sensation ( like Cezanne transposed this « small vital sensation « with strokes of his brush).

His use of video places the videographer in the lineage of the video pioneers of the 1960’s and 1970’s such as Bill Viola and Gary Hill, who explored different body perception techniques. However, contrary to these two artists, Dinahet turns his back on the symbolic and psychological, empirical, the site and the precise moment are the most important for him as can be seen in Er Lannic, Dinard, Belle-Ile, La Seille, Svetlogorsk, Cyprus, Famagusta)

If the artist throws himself into the « natural » decor then the videos give the impression to the viewer of being immersed. However, this immersion is not the result of merging with the elements. On the beach shows a common seaside scene: it takes place on an Atlantic beach at the seaside, the camera records the comings and goings of bathers in the glistening sand and in between the waves according to a holiday maker stretched out on the ground and this very position which describes the scene really shows the experience of visual, sound and tactile immersion and a state of sensorial hypnosis. The videographer captures the physical qualities of a situation he experienced and its components: light, colours, reflections, movements, screams, texture of the ground, impact of the wind etc. If he apparently focuses on basic elements like water, earth and air – these are seen within a particular context. It is indeed water, sand and stones but in situation.

In spite of notable differences, Marcel Dinahet’s aesthetic approach reminds one of some aspects of romanticism as in the immersion in a site, the dash towards reality and the intensity of this as well as his landscape manner echoes a romantic stroll. Romantic landscape holds some of the characteristics of spiritual intensification whilst the artist amplifies perception with the body’s eye. Carl Caspar Friedrich indeed painted with « the spirit of the eye » spiritualized landscapes in which characters have a double position, being both inside and outside : the observer is separated from the spectacle he is contemplating, when the eye of his spirit is beginning to dissolve. In nature the landscapes of Friedrich unify the paradoxical experience in a sentiment of spiritual communion with nature.

Dinahet restores the sensation of a person within the landscape, not the point of view of an observer: as if the characters in the landscapes of Friedrich had left their position as observer to leap into the landscape. The video director interprets the landscape as a corporal experience not as a visual representation whilst the romantic landscape is still painted in keeping with an occulary perspective. These landscapes are thus materialistic, proceeding according to the expression of Gaston Bachelard, from « a material imagination » which imagines, by amplifying it, what it perceives.

Materialistic visions

The most representative videos of the artist’s work are carried out according to the same principle :the camera floats and swims in water, near the shore or bank. Numerous aqua-terrestrial views in fixed shot make up the landscape paintings: Belle-Ile represents a storm, Svetlogorsk, the icy sea of the Baltic, Kliazma ( both in Russia) a lake under rain, Er Lannic, a megalithic site on the littoral of the Morbihan Gulf. This last one is a fabulous vision: the emerald sea invades the first close-up relegating to the second plan the rocky coast-line supported by an aquatic unsteady basis.
Recently, using the same method, he observed important governmental or cultural institutions in London and in Strasbourg. These buildings symbolic of power, seen from afar and put in the background of the image are laid on a moving and agitated watery mass taken in close shot ; Westminister Palace, Tate Modern, City Hall in London wobble on a mirror of water which folds and unfolds revealings its underlayers ( Les Institutions, London). The sound track which gives a normal splashing sound but also a deafening and profound sound increases the singularity of these images. If one looks at them for some time they actually provoke sea-sickness. These aqua- shorebased pictures reverse the natural percepetion of the ground and the concrete world. The horizon which is normally the stable line in occular vision now floats meandering and uncertain. As seen through water, the solid world lies on a moving and unstable base, the land becomes a phantasmagoria and reality becomes reversible. Likewise these visions become « real allegories ».

Crouched in La Seille river on its bank, hidden behind a green enclosure, the camera is immersed in a marshy watery environment which heaves, spouts and simmers. If The River and La Seille bring to mind the furtive look of an animal on the look-out, these two videos are compose of « material-matter » pictures. Observed in this manner, the water gains matter, textures and colours. These immersed views represent proof so condensed that it becomes abstract.
The most recent video shots in Ouessant also uses the procedure of a more radical and regular reduction – filmed at a close angle, a strip of emerald sea and a vertical cliff impose their presence, their horizontality and verticality and their colours, green and ocre. In effect the artist works the water as a sculptor would his raw materials or a mass, fashioning concrete design empirical phantasmagorias.

The manner in which he uses the camera like the eye of the body, accentuates a direct experience « I see», vidéo. Water video, land video. I see the sea, I see the land: this non subjective "I" represents the body – medium, which adds greater perception.

The drifting of the spy

If the artist dives into the water, he always operates on the river bank or sea-shore Fleet, The Institutions ( two series in London and Strasbourg filmed in 2007 and 2008), The River , La Seille, Estuaries. His floating apparatus and title of video defines a position and maybe a strategy. In a port, the camera floats on the surface, drifts amongst the boats and hulls and observes the built-up shores (Fleet). It pitches heavily gets immersed and emerges thus evoking an aquatic being in a hydric environment. Unstable and undefined, the message floats literally and figuratively. What is the situation which this message relates to ? That of an experienced swimmer, a frog-man, a person trying to drown himself or a water animal? This video like all these shot in water reveal an unusual posture: that of an invisible and all seeing being. This position is in contradiction with our body’s state: present and visible, as was the view of Maurice Merleau-Ponty.

The position of conspicuous invisible brings to mind the spy and more tragically: that of a swimmer in difficulty becomes comical. Sometimes comical, Fleet gives the impression of a spy drifting ignoring his whereabouts and his missions: is he a sleeping agent in a temporary passive state and who is not easily seen covering for an agent who is actually infiltrating ? Passive sleeping agent, subversive agent, infiltring agent in discreet spotting before the major institutions in London on the Thames and Strasbourg on the l’Ill. In Famagousta, in Cyprus, Dinahet observes "the phantom city " deserted and dead, under military occupation, this harmless-swimmer with hidden camera films the pictures from a forbidden zone. Secret service and spy vocabulary may be applied to such an aquatic strategy. Hidden, this hydreous mole blends in with the decor.

Along with this, the fact of choosing boundaries shows a strategic stance in the water and near the shore. Dinahet swims between two waters, littoral and the highseas, between two worlds, sea and land, always on the edge he is both immersed and yet on the shoreline. Like a real sailor, he holds land by the cheek and as a ludricious sailor he does not stray from the shore. Always a double act like the spy who is unable to appear as he really is and must disappear amongst ordinary men. His aquatic activity, so near land, seems to be as suspectful as it is suspect, doubtful as much as douting. This land sailor who belongs as much to water as to land, is it not a farcical swashbuckler? These periscopic glances show a weird existence, immersed, inside and outside, border line, intermediary: an undefined existence which is as absurd as it is intense.

The element of water

Apparently absurd, these observation techniques imply a indefinite wait whose real finality is not clear, revealing however the complexity of a situation and an element: aqua simplex becomes aqua complex. Dinahet is interested in the elements, water, land and air, with regard to the human context, an inhabited nature (ports, beaches) : he does not thus make this essential nor does he poeticize them but merely explores their materiality. He focuses on the relations between land and water, not on environmental issues or human geography.

According to the Chinese, the physical qualities of water is itself a form of power « power potential » . Running, moving, transparent, elusive, it flows everywhere. It can act invisibly become a slow and sinuous force, slowly gain ground on terra firma or become a frightening strength, violent and destructive even breaking rock. Dinahet is attached to certain qualities of water « when one sees the reflections one sees the water itself : you think then that you have surprised her whilst she creates beauty ; One can see she is beautiful in her shape, she has interior beauty and is a living beauty » (Water and Dreams). The camera and the diver’s mask offer the same possibilities to filter and thus see a material water, to see at the same time above and under the sea, the surface and the line between air and water. Above appears, in the middle ground of the video solid earth, rocks and structures. Between the two worlds, the shimmering surface and its reflections are constantly moving. Underneath, there is a troubled water with gelatinous matter, particles and algae. The most astonishing is to see the different aspects of a matter because water is also a mass and a surface. The artist concentrates in particular on the boundary, between the two: this contact zone between water and the air, shown by a thick and ondulating stroke which colors the majority of the images. The horizon drifts away; the world is looking for a infinite dissolution.

The water is no longer fascinating. Stripped of its myth, it loses its narcissism and its symbolism. Marcel Dinahet leaves aside the specular water, its subjective and cosmic narcissism, thus ignoring one of the principal hydrous significations. Adopting a position of retreat, he spies on the terrestrial waters which become as intense as well as strange. His visionary images are full of foreboding… cautious or committed, it denotes a catastrophe: invisible and constant, a catastrophe which takes place every day. The world is an Atlantis without knowing it.
